The days of the Royal family following traditional things are long gone, and 2020 has been fine proof of that. Ever since Meghan Markle entered the royal family when she married Prince Harry, all eyes have been on them. Then came January 8th, 2020 — the bombshell announcement that the couple would be leaving their royal duties and seeking financial independence across the ocean, in North America. And then all eyes fell back on Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
The Full Weight of the Crown Fell on Prince William & Kate Middleton
With Harry and Meghan’s decision to seek a more private life, it fell on William and Kate Middleton to carry the pretty heavy load of being the remaining full-time royals of their generation. The result is jam-packing their schedules, doing overtime, and going to great lengths to communicate to the public that the monarchy will be alright. And it probably will be, except for the fact that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are yet to make any sort of comment regarding Megxit.
Meghan and Harry’s Last Formal Event
The former Duke and Duchess of Sussex returned to London for their last official appearance as royals on March 31st. Although the seating arrangement was the same as last year’s edition of the annual Commonwealth Day Service, it was pretty obvious that the Cambridges and the Sussexes spoke to everyone else but each other. On January 15th, the first official event after the Cambridges’ holiday break, much was read into Prince William’s remarks about overcoming challenges and dealing with the obstacles life throws at all of us. Their continued radio silence on the topic of Megxit has continued even after Meghan and Harry’s last event as royal members.
The BAFTA Joke
News of Megxit even reached the likes of Hollywood star Brad Pitt, too. Although Pitt wasn’t present at the so-called British Oscars — the 2020 BAFTA Awards — he asked his co-star Margot Robbie to relay a message for him during his acceptance speech for supporting actor for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It stated that he would name the award “Harry” because it too will be going back to the United States. Ouch. Good thing Prince William and Kate Middleton (who attended the event) have a good sense of humor and laughed it off.
