The Masked Singer Episode Started Normally
Just like any other episode, the contestants took the stage where judges Ken Jeong, Nicole Scherzinger, Robin Thicke, and Jenny McCarthy had to rattle off their best guesses. However, after Gremlin sang Stand By Me by Ben E. King, things got particularly bizarre.
Before exiting the stage, Gremlin told host Nick Cannon that he wanted to take his mask off. The judges noticed that something was happening, and Jenny asked what was going on. Nick announced, “Gremlin’s telling me he wants to take this off, it’s too damn hot.”
Viewers Didn’t Have the Chance to Vote
Gremlin eliminated himself and took off his mask before the audience got the chance to vote for their favorite Group B contestant. Underneath the purple and white fur was Mickey Rourke — an Oscar-nominated actor.
Jenny McCarthy had named the Oscar-nominated star of The Wrestler as her guess. Robin Thicke commented that she “should have” known who the actor was, given that they’d “hung out a few times together down in Miami.”
Nick declared, “I don’t know what’s happening, ladies and gentlemen” and helped the masked singer take off the mask. Even though the audience didn’t get the chance to vote, everyone was clapping and cheering the Hollywood star. However, many fans were outraged in online forums and social media. Some believe that the whole episode was staged and Mickey had the arrangement to star in only 1 episode. Anyway, the show must go on, and so will The Masked Singer.
All the other contestants in Group B are safe and going into the next round of The Masked Singer because Gremlin took himself out.
